Inspired by Minecraft [link] I tried making some pixel art normal maps. The technique used to make every modern video game look wrinkly and warted, but repurposed for 3D pixel art. This would allow for dynamic lighting, such as the sun moving across the sky or the player walking around a mine while holding a torch.

If I spent some more time on making nicer looking blocks, I think this would be a very successful technique.

Addition of normal maps would kill that game.
So many draw calls...

I can't speak to how the Minecraft engine actually works, but I don't believe that it would be necessary to consider each block as an individual object. With a texture atlas, nearly every triangle in the game could be put into a single buffer. Or whatever memory allows.

But I'm still a novice programmer, so I could be missing something obvious.

If this could be implemented... Awesomeness would ensue. As if it didn't yet...

Very cool idea, I wonder what it would look like in the game, or at least on some grander scale.
